Dixie – Chestnut Mare 14 years old
In a previous life, Dixie was an show jumper and this has sealed her fate somewhat. She now has severe tendon problems which mean she is retired at the tender age of 14! She is a darling. She is sensitive and sweet.
Dixie was found at her previous owners yard, lacking in confidence and worried by everything. If she was approached with too little sensitivity to her needs, she would retreat to the back of her stable and turn her back, hiding her head in the corner.
Natural horsemanship has enabled Dixie to understand the intentions of he strange beings known as humans. She is now happy and relaxed.
Through her tendon problems Dixie became quite stressed with the veterinary interventions and suggested regime. This triggered laminitis, a condition which requires a strict control of food and grazing. For such a sensitive horse this has quite a detrimental effect. Having now researched natural forage based feeding she is happy in herself.
